LAKE TAHOE WINTER
Photo Essay by Larry Turner
The Blue Jewel of California--Lake Tahoeis a white, blue and green jewel
in the winter months. There are twelve alpine ski resorts in North Tahoe and
three in South Tahoe. There are three cross-country ski areas in South Tahoe
and six in North Tahoe, including the largest in North America: Royal Gorge
(see December-January 2001 Highonadventure). It is North Americas largest
alpine lake and among the deepest. The cobalt blue Lake Tahoe water is among
the clearest in the United States. With an average annual snow depth of 33 feet,
the Lake Tahoe Sierra Mountains are a mecca for ski, snowboard and recreation
enthusiasts. One-third of Lake Tahoe lies in Nevada and the remainder in California.
